Introducing Lottie Joiner

Bio

I am Lottie Joiner, a talented writer, reporter and editor with more than ten years of journalism experience. A native of Mississippi, I've lived in the DC metropolitan area for a decade. I've worked at several media outlets and would like to continue my career at a mainstream publication. My experience includes stints at several national publications. In college, I was a radio announcer with a highly rated jazz and gospel show. In addition, I have freelanced for a number of mainstream media outlets including The Washington Post, Gannett News Service, USAToday.com and Essence magazine, covering issues ranging from business and education to civil rights and social justice. I have won several journalism awards including one for my investigative work on school shootings. Currently, I am the senior editor at The Crisis Magazine. The quarterly journal focuses on social and political issues, art and culture. During my tenure at The Crisis, I have headed up several special issues including our coverage of the 50th anniversary of the Brown v. Board of Education decision; the 3-city funeral of civil rights icon Rosa Parks and our in-depth look at the state of African American health. When I'm not working, I like to travel, go to museums, attend live jazz shows and festivals, and hang out with my friends. I also like to volunteer. I have been a mentor to a young lady for more than eight years and she is now in her third year of college. My goal is to have a positive impact on the life of a young person, my community and society.
